Term Overview

This term overview is an indication of the work I have planned and will be adjusted according to student response and other opportunities for learning that occur throughout the term.

Term 1 – 2020 Overview – Val Crozier Room 31
This term overview is an indication of the work I have planned and will be adjusted according to student response and other opportunities for learning that occur throughout the term.  Our Year 5 History topic which provides a study of colonial Australia in the 1800s, and the Year 6 History topic which moves from colonial Australia to the development of Australia as a nation, particularly after 1900 will influence our learning.  Please continue to provide the great support for your child at home.

English
This term students will be focusing on two genres – Persuasive and Narrative.  They will be looking at the text features, structure and most importantly, adding descriptive details to their writing.  By the end of term, hopefully students will understand the different purposes of texts and how to independently structure their writing.
There will also be a large focus on handwriting and consistent formation of letters and numbers.
Punctuation and Functional Grammar is an area which will also have a focus. Students have already begun explicit lessons around punctuation, correct sentence structure and functional grammar.
All students have individualised spelling contracts taken from words they have spelt incorrectly in testing and their work.  Putting words into sentences, marking up phonograms, identifying antonyms, synonyms, prefixes and suffixes, and identifying Functional Grammar in their sentences will be weekly tasks throughout the term.
Room 31 and 30 are going to be involved in the ‘Fresh Start’ program (a version of Read, Write, Inc.) to help students in need of extra literacy help.

Maths
This term, students will be tested and will revise mathematical topics in preparation for NAPLAN in Term 2.  There will also be a focus on:
Number and Place Value – including four operation
      Fractions, Decimals and Percentages
      Pattern/Number Lines
      Measurement
      3D Shapes
      Word Problems/Problem solving tasks

Problem Solving lessons are based on Ann Baker’s Natural Maths Strategies. Students expand their thinking and work collaboratively with their peers. Hopefully there will be 2 problem solving lessons per week, with a set of questions students will need to research and then describe their findings.

HASS - History
This will be covered throughout terms 1 and 2.  Students will gain knowledge and understanding by addressing key questions:
Year 5
What do we know about the lives of people in Australia’s colonial past and how do we know?
How did an Australian colony develop over time and why?
How did colonial settlement change the environment?
What were the significant events and who were the significant people that shaped Australian colonies?
Reasons (economic, political and social) for the establishment of British colonies in Australia after 1800
Year 6
Why and how did Australia become a nation?
How did Australian society change throughout the twentieth century?
Who were the people who came to Australia? Why did they come?
What contribution have significant individuals and groups made to the development of Australian society?
Key figures, events and ideas that led to Australia’s Federation and Constitution.

The content in the history sub-strand provides opportunities for students to develop historical understanding through key concepts including sources, continuity and change, cause and effect, perspectives, empathy and significance.

Health is taught in the classroom with me.  The Child Protection Program is taught throughout the school as part of the Health and Safety curriculum. It provides children with skills to recognise when they are in unsafe situations and to make decisions about how to keep themselves safe.  The two main themes are:-
o      You have the right to feel safe all of the time
o      Nothing is so bad you can't tell somebody about it
This term I also have a focus on Mindfulness and Resilience and hopefully provide strategies to remain calm in stressful situations.
